Battle Creek, Michigan, is an American city with a population of 52,731. Its famous nickname, "Cereal City," is due to being the home of the Kellogg Company and the founding city of Post Consumer Brands. One theory about the source of the city's name is that it came from a fight between indigenous tribes near a nearby stream called Battle Creek River before the arrival of Europeans. Another theory suggests that the city was named after an encounter between a federal government land survey party and two Potawatomi in March 1824. Notably, it was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad and a chosen residence of the renowned abolitionist Sojourner Truth. During the 60s, Battle Creek, Michigan, was plagued with racial issues that resulted in discrimination against African Americans in education and employment. The Black Recondos, a group that emerged from the local young adult council of the NAACP, took a stand. They demanded the local board of education hire black teachers and administrators, threatening to withdraw every black student from public schools. Additionally, they pressured the chief of police to let Black Recondos take part in arrests, which led to the second strike of a police force in U.S. history. This led to the officers' firing and the strike's end.
