Berkeley is a city in northern California, named after the Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley with a population of 124,321. It is home to the oldest campus in the University of California, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is also home to the Graduate Theological Union, one of the most extensive religious studies institutions globally. It is known for being one of the most socially progressive cities in the United States. It borders Oakland and Emeryville to the south and Albany and Kensington to the north. History of Berkley, CA The Ohlone people initially inhabited Berkeley, and the first Europeans arrived with the De Anza Expedition in 1776. The land was granted to Luis Peralta and then to his son Domingo, with all land titles based on the original grant. Berkeley became part of Contra Costa County and then the northern part of the "Oakland Township" subdivision of Alameda County. The University of California was established in 1866, and residences, saloons, and industries grew around the wharf area called Ocean View. The "mile limit law" was enacted in 1876, and in 1899, Berkeley residents voted to make their city an alcohol-free zone. On April 1, 1878, the Town of Berkeley was incorporated, with the first elected trustees being the Workingman's Party. Berkeley had segregated housing and anti-Chinese laws during the 1880s but quickly adopted electric lights, telephones, and streetcars due to the influence of the university. Berkeley experienced significant growth during World War II due to the influx of people working in war industries. It became strongly associated with the counterculture movements of the 1960s, particularly the hippie movement, and saw the establishment of iconic landmarks such as People's Park. In the 1970s and 1980s, activists gained more power in local government and introduced policies such as rent control and establishing Berkeley's Domestic Partner Task Force.
