Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River and is the capital county seat of New York. It is situated 10 miles south of where it converges with the Mohawk River and about 135 miles north of NYC. The city is renowned for its stunning architecture, bustling economic activity, cultural vibrancy, renowned universities, and illustrious past. The city of Albany serves as the economic and cultural hub for New York's Capital District. This region includes the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area and its nearby towns & suburbs, such as Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. The Capital District is the third most densely populated area in New York State, with an estimated population of 1.1 million in 2013. In 2020, Albany had a population of 99,224 people. For centuries, Pempotowwuthut-Muhhcanneuw (Hudson River area) was home to the Algonquian-speaking Mohican tribe. Dutch settlers initially inhabited the region and set up Fort Nassau to facilitate the fur trade in 1614. These same settlers then established Fort Orange in 1624. In 1664, the English seized control of the Dutch settlements and rechristened it Albany in honor of James II, who held the title of Duke of Albany then. Back in 1686, New York obtained its official charter while being ruled by England. After establishing the United States, it became the capital of New York in 1797. Albany has quite an impressive history, being one of the oldest continuously chartered cities in the US, with no other city surpassing its track record. It is a surviving settlement from the original thirteen colonies established by Britain. Throughout the late 18th century and 19th century, Albany was a central trading hub due to its location at the head of the navigable Hudson River. Way back in the day, it served as the easternmost terminus for the momentous Erie Canal and connected to those beautiful Great Lakes. Moreover, it had some of the world's earliest existing railroad tracks around it. During the 1920s, a formidable political organization led by the Democrats developed in Albany. Towards the end of the 20th century, Albany's population decreased due to suburbanization and the dispersal of people from cities into other areas. During the 1990s, the New York State Legislature passed a massive US$234 million building and redevelopment plan for Albany. This initiated a downtown revival of the city. In the early 2000s, Albany saw exponential growth in its high-tech sector, primarily due to innovations in nanotechnology.
