Arvada is located in Jefferson and Adams counties, Colorado. Denver is the capital of Colorado, and the Denver–Aurora—Lakewood metropolitan area. It's a growing city with many jobs, a diversified economy, and great neighborhoods. The city is home to many historical sites and was founded in 1858. The city's population was 124,402 in the 2020 US Census, with 121,510 people in Jefferson County and 2,892 in Adams county. Arvada is the seventh most populous city in Colorado. History of Arvada, CO On June 22nd, 1850, a Georgia prospector from California named Lewis Ralston dipped his pan into a small stream near Clear Creek and discovered gold, The first documented discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountain region. Ralston found about 6 g of gold worth about $5. Ralston's partners named the stream Ralston's Creek in his honor. However, they left early the following day, following the lure of gold during the Pike Peak Gold Rush in 1858. Farmers in the Colorado territory had been getting a rich harvest of crops for some time when some miners gave up on gold and started to farm back by Ralston Creek & Clear Creek. The Territory, formed on February 28th, 1861, allowed farms in the valley to expand further with population growth. The water tower in Olde Town Arvada was built to avoid confusion with other communities near Ralston Creek. Instead, it was called "Arvada" after the settlement that Mary Wadsworth's brother-in-law founded. It was granted statehood on August 1st and officially incorporated on August 14th. On December 9th, 2007, Matthew Murray entered the Youth With a Mission center in Arvada and killed two people. Fortunately, two more were wounded. A memorial was held the following Wednesday. The Youth With A Mission leaders shared forgiveness with the Murray family for what happened to them. On Monday, June 21st, 2021, Ronald Troyke killed an Arvada police officer, Gordon Beesley, with a semi-automatic shotgun. He then returned to his truck and retrieved an AR-15 rifle. As he proceeded down the street, bystander Johnny Hurley shot and killed him with a handgun. Hurley picked up Troyke's rifle, and Arvada police officer arriving on the scene fatally shot Hurley. He mistook him for Beesley's shooter. Troyke allegedly targeted the Arvada police officers in general, but authorities still haven't determined the motive. Troyke had reportedly been seen filming police at crime scenes. Given all of this information, authorities have decided not to press charges of murder against Troyke for killing Hurley on November 8th, 2021.
