On May 22, 1949, a tornado ravished the southern part of Altoona. Reports by the Altoona Mirror show that it touched down in Allegheny Township's Canan Station, creating a path of destruction that was 100 yards long (91 m). The Altoona Mirror newspaper, founded in 1876 by Harry Slep, is Altoona's oldest media outlet.
