Brockton is located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and had a population of 105,643 during the 2020 United States census. As the sixth-largest city in Massachusetts, Brockton is known as the "City of Champions" due to the success of native boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler and its own Brockton High School sports programs. It is also one of the two county seats of Plymouth County alongside Plymouth. Two of its famous villages are Montello and Campello, both of which have MBTA Commuter Rail Stations and post offices. Despite being a minor neighborhood, Campello has the highest population density. Brockton is also home to the Brockton Rox baseball team. History of Brockton, MA Brockton's history dates back to 1649 when Ousamequin (Massasoit) sold the surrounding Wampanoag land, then Saughtucket, to Myles Standish as an addition to Duxbury. Brockton was part of this area, renamed by the English as Bridgewater. In 1821, a portion of the then-Bridgewater Township was established as North Bridgewater. The city was ultimately named after Isaac Brock, a British commanding general at Queenston Heights during the War of 1812. Despite contention among colonial residents, the town was officially named Brockton in 1874 and became a city on April 9, 1881. Brockton played a role in the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North and Canada. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass even spoke to a crowd at the Liberty Tree in Brockton during the pre-Civil War period. During the American Civil War, Brockton became America's largest producer of shoes, and the city had a robust shoe and leather products industry until the latter part of the 20th century. Since the founding of office supplies retailer W.B. Mason in 1898, Brockton has been the headquarters city for the company, which was established to provide supplies to the city's shoe industry. While Brockton's economy was once based on the shoe industry, it has since diversified to include other sectors such as healthcare, education, and manufacturing. Despite facing challenges such as poverty, crime, and regional and local racial segregation, the city has made significant progress in recent years, particularly in the downtown area.
