Auburn is a city in Lee County, Alabama, United States. It is the biggest city in eastern Alabama, with a projected 2020 total population of 76.143. 3 It is the principal city in the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Area. It has a population of 158,991, along with the Columbus, GA-AL MSA, and Tuskegee, Alabama, comprises the greater Columbus-Auburn-Opelika, GA-AL CSA, a region home to 501,649 residents. Auburn is an old college town that is home to Auburn University. History of Auburn, AL The area was once inhabited by the Creek The land upon the site where Auburn is located made available for settlement in 1832 following the Treaty of Cusseta. The first settlers came from Harris County, Georgia, in the winter of 1836. These settlers led J.J. Harper, Judge John J. Harper, planned to establish an area that would serve as the center of education and religion for the region. An abundance of residential and commercial construction drove Auburn's development beyond the initial limits of the city, which led to many significant annexations, which increased the size of Auburn to a total of 24 square miles or 62 square kilometers. The construction of Interstate 85, beginning in 1957, linked Auburn with the main cities in the state. This led to Auburn University being renamed in 1960 to host more football home games in Auburn rather than in bigger cities, creating a substantial tourist industry in Auburn's economy. Auburn Mall opened as Village Mall in 1973. Its growth was slowed during the 1970s, and a string of cutbacks to the budget made it evident that Auburn's sole economic dependence on Auburn University put the city in a tense situation. Resentment against what was viewed as a sloppy city council resulted in an election for Jan Dempsey as mayor in 1980, and the demise of the city's previous governance system in favor of the council-manager model.
