Augusta is known as the capital of the U.S. State of Maine and is the city of Kennebec County.[33 The population was 18,899 as of the census in 2020. It was in 1929 that the Maine legislature voted to establish the Augusta State Airport next to the camp. The airport expanded, and the camp's use as a training center was no longer feasible. It is currently utilized for logistical and administrative reasons through the National Guard. At the turn of the century, Augusta had a steamboat that was regularly operating, as well as a railway. The city was able to install gas lights in 1859. Telephone services were available in 1880, and the hospital was opened in 1898.
