Cary is a town located in North Carolina and forms a part of the Raleigh-Cary metropolitan area. The city has population was 174,721 as of 2020, which grew to 176,987 by 2021. Cary started as a railroad village and later became recognized for its educational facilities. It is now home to many technology-based companies. It boasts a highly educated population, with over 68% of adults holding a bachelor's degree or higher. Cary has the highest median household income in the county at $107,463 and was recognized as the safest mid-sized place to live in the US, according to 2019 FBI data. History of Cary, NC Cary has rich history dates back to when the Tuscarora and Catawba tribes inhabited the area. However, their population was reduced significantly due to smallpox epidemics after European settlers arrived. Several plantations were established in the area on the road connecting Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Cary's growth as a town began in 1854 with the arrival of the North Carolina Railroad, which linked it to a significant transportation route. Allison Francis "Frank" Page purchased land around the planned railroad junction and named the community Cary after his admiration for Samuel Fenton Cary. The town was incorporated in 1871, with Page as the first mayor. The Act of Incorporation prohibited the sale of alcohol, and the town's boundaries were set as one sq mi. Cary's growth continued in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the arrival of the Raleigh and Augusta Air-Line Railroad in 1879 and the creation of Fetner Junction. In 1896, sixteen Cary residents purchased Cary Academy, which was converted into the private boarding school Cary High School. In 1907, Cary High School was transferred to the state for $2,750, making it the state's first state-funded public high school. The town's population grew by 64% during the 1920s, thanks to the construction of the paved Western Wake Highway, which connected Cary to Raleigh via automobile, followed by paved roads to Durham and Apex. After World War II, Cary began to attract industry, including the Taylor Biscuit Company, which became the town's largest employer with some 200 employees. Cary continued to grow in the 1960s and 1970s after the opening of the nearby Research Triangle Park, which was planned around scientific and technical workers. Today, Cary has three districts recognized by the National Register of Historic Places: the Carpenter Historic District, the Green Level Historic District, and the Cary Historic District.
