Billings is the largest city in Montana, with a population of over 117,000, serving as the trade and distribution center for most of Montana. It has experienced rapid growth and a strong economy, avoiding the economic downturn of the rest of the nation and hosting various events. Its attractions include Yellowstone Art Museum, Pompey's Pillar, Pictograph Cave, Chief Plenty Coups State Park, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and Red Lodge Mountain Resort. The growth rate has diminished in recent years with oil price declines. History of Billings, MT Billings, Montana, was named after Frederick H. Billings, former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad from Vermont. The Crow, Cheyenne, and Gros Ventre people also have names for the city related to a sawmill built in the area. The city is located in the Yellowstone Valley, and the Billings Rimrocks were formed by the Yellowstone River carving its way through Eagle Sandstone. The Pictograph Caves, south of downtown, contain over 100 pictographs and artifacts that prove the area has been occupied since at least 2600 BC. The site has been essential to the Crow Indians since about 1700. William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1806 and was named Pompey's Pillar after the son of his Shoshone interpreter. Settlers from the Gallatin Valley area formed Coulson, the first town of the Yellowstone Valley, in 1877. Coulson was expected to become the largest town when the railroad arrived, but the railroad chose to create a new village called Billings instead. Coulson faded away as most residents moved to Billings. Billings grew rapidly and was nicknamed the Magic City. Coulson Park now sits on the land where Coulson once was. Billings, Montana, has grown rapidly since its founding, becoming an energy center in the early 1900s with the discovery of oil fields and natural gas and coal reserves. Billings has seen significant growth in its downtown core and became a shopping destination after completing large sections of the interstate system in Montana in the 1970s. In the 21st century, Billings has seen the development of operations centers by national companies, continued growth, and the effects of the Bakken formation oil boom in the surrounding areas.
