Akron is the fifth most populated city in the state but holds its own. At the western end of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau and roughly 40 miles south of Cleveland, Akron is also Summit County's county seat. The 2020 US census recorded a population of 190,469 in the city proper, putting it in the 125th position nationwide. The Akron metropolitan area, incorporating Summit and Portage counties, was estimated to have a population of 703,505. Established in 1825, the city of Akron was created by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams. The settlement's location was strategically along the Little Cuyahoga River due to its proximity to the progress of the Ohio and Erie Canals. The term Akron is derived from the Ancient Greek word ἄκρον, which means 'high point.' It was initially called South Akron when Eliakim Crosby founded North Akron in 1833. However, both areas were later merged into one incorporated village in 1836. At the start of the 1910s, Akron experienced a significant population surge, making it the most rapidly-developing city in America. Akron is famously known as the "Rubber Capital of the World" due to its extensive history in non-pneumatic rubber & tire production, which has still been continued by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. It also held a significant role in airship development. Nowadays, the area's economy involves manufacturing, education, healthcare, and research. Some well-known companies in the region are Gojo Industries, FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, and Charter Spectrum. Akron boasts of several noteworthy events from the past, such as the 1847 Akron School Law, which established the K–12 system. It was also responsible for popularizing the architecture of churches known as the Akron Plan. Multiple significant milestones have been deeply etched in the city's history. This includes the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous, The Akron Experiment, which aimed to prevent goiters through salt iodization, and a small portion of the 2014 Gay Games. Furthermore, the Supreme Court's 'The City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health' ruling in 1983 is highly significant and deserving of a mention. Boasting a diverse population, the city has been witness to some of the most critical racial relations speeches in history, including those by Sojourner Truth ('Ain't I A Woman?' speech, 1851), W.E.B. Dubois (1920) and Bill Clinton (1997). In 1914, Marcus Garvey established the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Akron, which underwent significant civil unrests like the riot of 1900, the rubber strike of 1936, and the Wooster Avenue riots of 1968.
