Bellevue, a city in King County, Washington, has a population of 151,854 residents as of 2020. It has become a hub for some of the largest technology companies in the world, undergoing extensive growth with multiple high-rise projects in development. Bellevue's downtown area is the second-largest city center in Washington state, housing 1,300 businesses, 45,000 employees, and 10,200 residents. History of Bellevue, WA Bellevue was founded in 1869 by William Meydenbauer and Aaron Mercer. By 1882, a community of mostly logging homesteaders had established itself. The area was converted into small-scale farming with the help of Japanese immigrant labor during the early 20th century. Bellevue was a popular weekend getaway destination until the ferry landing was moved to Medina, which led to the conception of the Bellevue Strawberry Festival in 1925 to boost tourism. By the 1930s, the festival attracted up to 15,000 visitors to the town, with a population of around 2,000. The Duwamish maintained small outposts in the area, including Satskal along the Mercer Slough and pah-pah-DEEL near Factoria. Bellevue was primarily a rural farmland area until the opening of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge in 1940.
