Ann Arbor is a city in Michigan also included in the Greater Detroit Combined Statistical Area and the Great Lakes megalopolis, North America's most populated and largest megalopolis. Ann Arbor was founded in 1824, named after the wives of the village's founders, both Ann and the stands of bur oak trees. The city's population increased in the early to mid-20th century. Ann Arbor was started by land investors John Allen and Elisha Walker Rumsey on May 25, 1824, and registered with Wayne County as "Annarbour." This is the first known usage of the city's name. It has since grown to be a bustling metropolis. Allen and Rumsey were inspired by the bur oak trees on their 640-acre land and decided to name it after their wives, both named Ann. This purchase cost them a total of $800 from the federal government- that would be $1.25 per acre. The Ojibwa people in the area nicknamed this settlement 'kaw-goosh-kaw-nick' due to the sound of Allen's sawmill. Ann Arbor initially became the county seat of Washtenaw County in 1827 and officially became a village in 1833. The Ann Arbor Land Company had 40 acres of untouched land and offered it to Michigan as the location for the state capitol. However, the bid was eventually awarded to Lansing. The original settlers of the area had predominantly British origins. However, over time the demographics changed to include those of German, Irish, and African-American ancestry. Ann Arbor was established in 1851 but saw a drop in population during the economic crisis of 1873. It was in the early 1880s that Ann Arbor started to grow again, with an influx of people from Greece, Italy, Russia, and Poland. In 1956, a ballot was held, and East Ann Arbor voted to merge with Ann Arbor, which resulted in the city's eastern districts being included. Over the intervening years, escalating land costs and urban expansion into close-by rural areas have been significant issues that Ann Arbor has had to confront. On November 4, 2003, Ann Arbor's citizens supported a greenbelt plan to purchase development rights on agricultural land near the city to prevent urban sprawl. This crucial move has helped maintain the rural areas around Ann Arbor. In recent years, Ann Arbor has been widely discussed for how it should govern the growth and development of the city. Ann Arbor continues to be listed among the top places to live each year, according to multiple publications. In 2008, CNNMoney.com rated it the 27th best small city out of 100 in America, and in 2010, Forbes declared it one of the most liveable cities in the US.
