Brunswick, Georgia, is a bustling city with a population of 15,210, according to the 2020 census. As a vital urban and economic hub for the southeast portion of Georgia, it boasts a rich history as an important port city with significant strategic military importance during World War II. The city's economy is primarily based on tourism and logistics, with the Port of Brunswick handling about 10% of all U.S. roll-on/roll-off trade. Located on the Atlantic Ocean harbor, Brunswick is approximately 40 miles north of Florida and 80 miles south of South Carolina. History of Brunswick, GA The Mocama people inhabited Brunswick and the Spanish established missions in Timucuan villages in 1568. Little colonization occurred despite the British's claim to all lands south to the 31st parallel north when the Province of Carolina was founded in 1663. James Oglethorpe challenged the Spaniards who laid claim to St. Simons Island when he had the town of Frederica built in 1736. The Spanish were driven out of the province following British victories in Bloody Marsh and Gully Hole Creek battles in 1742. Mark Carr, a Scotsman, established the town of Brunswick in 1771. During the American Revolutionary War, many of Brunswick's citizens, including loyalists, fled to East Florida, the Caribbean Basin, and the United Kingdom for protection. Brunswick was officially recognized as a port of entry in 1789 by the United States Congress and became an officially incorporated city on February 22, 1856. In the late 1800s, Brunswick experienced economic prosperity after one of the largest lumber mills in the country began operating on nearby St. Simons Island. Sidney Lanier even wrote a poem about the city called "The Marshes of Glynn" in 1878. However, Brunswick also faced hardships after a yellow fever epidemic in 1893. A Category 4 hurricane hit Cumberland Island just south of Brunswick in October 1898, causing a 16-foot storm surge in the city, killing 179 people. During World War II, Brunswick played a crucial role, producing 99 Liberty ships due to the booming J.A. Jones Construction Company. While the city's electric streetcar line was discontinued in 1926, the F.J. Torras Causeway was completed and helped connect Brunswick to other areas. Brunswick's Naval Air Station Glynco was essential in escorting almost 100,000 ships safely, thanks to its blimps patrolling the coastal areas. Additionally, the city produced ships designed for short coastal runs and named after knots. The first ship was launched in March 1943, and the last boat was launched in August 1945, with most vessels being built in about two months.
