Abilene, situated in the counties of Taylor and Jones in Texas, USA, had a population count of 125,182, according to the 2020 census. This makes it the 27th most populous urban area in Texas. Abilene is the premier city of its metropolitan area, which in 2016 was estimated to have a population of 169,893. Abilene is located in Taylor County, Texas, and is the home of three Christian universities - Abilene Christian University, McMurry University, and Hardin-Simmons University. Dyess Air Force Base is situated just on the outer west side of the town. Located on Interstate 20 between exits 279 & 292, Abilene is about 150 miles from Fort Worth. It is surrounded by I-20 on the north, US 83/84 to its west, and Loop 322 on the east. The railroad runs in the middle of the city, separating it into two halves - north and south. The downtown area, bustling with activities and rich in history, has developed on the north side of this railroad. Abilene, Texas, was founded in 1881 by cattlemen who used the city as a railway stock shipping point. Abilene was established to commemorate Abilene, Kansas - the end of the historic Chisholm Trail. Buffalo Gap was the county seat then, and the T&P railroad passed around it. Clabe Merchant, the man known as the father of Abilene, was a landowner located north of Buffalo Gap, and he decided on the name for this new town. Abilene was officially formed in 1881, and soon after, the city's citizens decided to make it their county seat. Through a three-to-one vote, they successfully brought their vision to fruition. In 1888, The Progressive Committee was established to draw businesses nearby. Subsequently, it changed its name to The Board of Trade in 1890. By the year 1900, Abilene had a population of 3,411 people. During that decade, the Board of Trade renamed itself the 25,000 Club, hoping to achieve a population count of 25,000 by the following census. Unfortunately, by 1910 only 9,204 people were recorded. In 1914, the Young Men's Booster Club developed into the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. This new organization was created to provide support and resources to the local business community. In 1891, the building blocks of Simmons College were put down in Abilene, setting off a chain reaction that would lead to the foundation of Hardin–Simmons University. This was the first of three universities to be established in this city. Established in 1906, the Childers Classical Institute underwent expansion & growth, eventually transforming into Abilene Christian University as the largest of three. In 1923, McMurry College was founded and added other offerings to become McMurry University. During the late 20th century, Abilene saw Texas State Technical College and Cisco College branches open in the city. The latter's headquarters are based in Abilene. In 1940, Abilene was able to fundraise money to acquire land to bring a U.S. Army base into the vicinity of their town. This base was then named Camp Barkeley. Abilene was in danger of becoming a ghost town after the end of World War II, as Camp Barkeley – twice the size of Abilene with 60,000 men – had closed down. Fortunately, veterans returned to Abilene with new ideas, and businesses flourished, avoiding such a dire outcome. Abilene is the substantial center of a 19-district region called "The Big Country" or the "Texas Midwest." It boasts numerous stores, medical services, transport, and businesses for the area. It is part of the Central Great Plains ecoregion. By the end of 2005, commercial and residential construction had reached a high point in and around the city's area.
