Aurora can be described as a city located in the Chicago metropolitan region. It is primarily located in DuPage and Kane Counties, the second-highest populated city in Illinois in the state, following Chicago. It is the 144th-highest populated town in the United States. 180,542 people lived there as of the time of the 2020 census. Within Kane County, Aurora's city limits have grown to include DuPage, Kendall, and Will counties. A former mid-sized city for manufacturing, Aurora has grown since the 1960s. Between 2000 and 2009, it was reported that the U. S. Census Bureau ranked Aurora classified Aurora as the 46th most rapidly growing city, with an estimated population of more than 100,000. Seven years later, Aurora was given the name City of Lights because, in 1881, it was among one of the first towns in the United States to implement an electric street lighting system that was entirely electrical. History of Aurora, IL Before European colonists came to the area, there was a Native American village in downtown Aurora along the Fox River banks. After the Black Hawk War, the McCarty brothers established themselves on both sides of the river. They later sold their property on the west side to the Lake brothers, who built the mill. The McCartys resided on and ran an east side. Aurora was founded after establishing a post office in 1837. Aurora was initially two villages: East Aurora, incorporated in 18510 on the east side of the river. West Aurora was also formally organized on the west bank of the river in 1854. In 1857, the two towns merged and became an urban area of Aurora. The representatives could not agree on what side of the river to house those public structures, so they were built around Stolp Island in the central part of the river. As the city expanded, it was a magnet for factories and employment. In 1849, following a failure to draw to the Galena and the Chicago Union Railroad, which was constructing west of Chicago and the Aurora Branch Railroad was chartered to establish a connection from Aurora towards the GCU in a location known as Turner Junction, now West Chicago. Other lines were also built, with one directly connecting to Chicago. The mid-1980s saw increased crime rates, and street gangs were formed. At this point, Aurora began to become more diverse in its ethnicity.
