Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of Georgia and is located in the north-central part of the state. Its proximity to a major interstate makes it accessible by foot, car, or plane, while its population centers make it ideal for companies with employees spread across different locations. The Western and Atlantic Railroad operated from 1833 through 1836 and provided the means for Atlanta's growth (and name) from a settlement to a banking center. History of Atlanta, GA The Creek Indians called the area "Chattahoochee" or "Red Land." The land in this region was often swampy and undisturbed before European settlers arrived. Standing Peachtree is the location of an early Native American settlement. It is the closest to what is now Atlanta. The Creek of northern Georgia were forced out of their homes in the early 19th century as European Americans grew in number. The Creek was forced to leave in 1821 due to Indian Removal by the federal government, and Europeans arrived in 1822. In 1836, the Georgia General Assembly voted to build the Western and Atlantic Railroad to link the port of Savannah and the Midwest. At one point, the company wanted to run a route from Chattanooga to Savannah, but they encountered some difficulties building their railroad. The population of Atlanta had grown to over 9,000 by 1860. Railroads made it a strategic hub during the American Civil War. In 1864, the Union Army initiated its invasion of north Georgia. The Union Army had recently captured Chattanooga, Tennessee, and began moving southward. Atlanta's location was significant in several major battles of the Civil War and culminated in a four-month-long siege by the Union Army under General Sherman. Confederate General John Bell Hood ordered the destruction of all public buildings and possible assets on September 1st, 1864. The Union army would be positioned to capture Atlanta for a good reason. On November 11th, 1864, General William T. Sherman ordered the Union Army to destroy Atlanta's military assets. The city was almost entirely burnt to the ground during General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea. Atlanta was reconstructed after the Civil War, not through the "Reconstruction era" but instead during the period between 1865 and 1868. In 1868, Atlanta became Georgia's state capital, following a decision by the State Legislature to switch seats due to Atlanta's superior rail transportation network. Atlanta overtook Savannah as Georgia's largest city in 1880. By the 1880s, Atlanta had a thriving economy with many new industries (like railroads), making it a prime destination for investors. And in the New South, education became the main focus rather than literal agriculture. Over one thousand businesses were destroyed in the fire on May 21st, 1917. The victims were mostly displaced families that lost everything they had, with a single fatality only. In the 1950s, an improved highway system in Atlanta made it easier for middle-class Atlantans to move to more desirable areas. While Atlanta was generally prosperous in the postwar era, the color barrier and other forms of discrimination limited opportunities for African-Americans. In 1961, Atlanta attempted to thwart blockbusting by erecting fences around Cascade Heights. Business and civic leaders hoped to foster Atlanta as a "city too busy to hate." The Olympic Legacy project, which Atlanta initiated towards the end of the 20th century, focused on major initiatives that transformed the city and its status into a major global center in the past few decades. Given its rapidly changing situation, Downtown Atlanta has received more attention from residents and international companies over the past ten years.
