Appleton, Wisconsin, is a bustling city in Outagamie, Calumet, and Winnebago counties. It is part of the Fox Cities metropolitan region, the third largest in the state, following Milwaukee and Madison. Aside from the usual events, this place also organizes regional celebrations like Octoberfest and Mile of Music. History of Appleton, WI In the 1836 Treaty of the Cedars, led by Chief Oshkosh, the Menominee Nation yielded the land to the US. After many years of negotiations between the Menominee, Ho-Chunk & the federal government, a treaty was made to provide refuge to the Oneida, Stockbridge-Munsee & Brothertown people displaced from New York and resettled in Wisconsin. The Ho-Chunk Nation should have given their approval to the last treaty that was meant to transfer Menominee land. In the Menominee language, Appleton is called Ahkōnemeh, or "spot for watching." Fur traders initially explored and settled Appleton in search of commerce with Fox River Valley Native Americans. The settlement started as three distinct villages situated along the Fox River. Running south to north along the river, three different cities could be found: Grand Chute, Appleton, and Lawesburg. These were combined in 1853 to form a single village named Appleton. Samuel Appleton, Lawrence's father-in-law from New England, donated a generous $10,000 to the library of the recently founded college. The town was so appreciative that they decided to give his name to the library in honor of his contribution. On the 30th of September 1882, the Vulcan Street Plant on Fox River in America opened its doors, marking a milestone in history with it becoming the country's first hydroelectric central station. It was a revolutionary moment as it meant providing power to paper companies. The Edison system was used to power the Hearthstone House - the first home in the world to be run by an energy source from a hydroelectric station. The same hydroelectric plant provided energy to this great household. In August 1886, Appleton made history again by becoming the first place to have a commercially successful electric streetcar company. It was also the first city in Wisconsin to have a telephone and the first outside of the East Coast with incandescent light. The City of Appleton saw significant expansions in the following two decades, with the first being from the Town of Grand Chute. Known as "Glendale," this district was annexed on the 8th of November 1941, pushing the northern limits past Glendale Avenue. The small villages of Bell Heights and Whispering Pines located in Grand Chute were officially incorporated into the city on the 22nd of December, 1950, after long-standing disputes between them. This marked an important milestone in the history of the town. Bell Heights expanded the area of Appleton to the northwest, while Whispering Pines was added to the northeast, including the land where Appleton Memorial Hospital was later erected. The 222 Building stood Appleton's tallest structure and was constructed in 1952. The historic Valley Fair Shopping Center opened in 1954 and is renowned for being America's first fully enclosed shopping mall. Though some other malls also dispute this claim. The rust belt cities of Wisconsin were recently surveyed, with the report showing high levels of lead in Appleton's water supply; even young kids under one tested positive. This followed the Flint water tragedy and reminds us of our responsibility to safeguard citizens from health risks like lead contamination. Appleton's test results for the age group surveyed showed a rate of 4.5 per 100, higher than the statewide average of 1.9 per 100.
