Antioch is the 3rd biggest city in Contra Costa County, CA. It's part of the San Francisco Bay Area near the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. The city's population was 115,291 at the 2020 census. Since the 1970s, the city has seen impressive growth in its diversity. Antioch, one of the area's oldest towns, has undergone many name changes in history - from East Antioch to Marsh's Landing and Smith's Landing. Eventually, it was given its current name. History of Antioch, CA John Marsh, who owned Rancho Los Méganos (one of the biggest ranches in California) in 1848, constructed a pier on the San Joaquin River at what is presently known as Antioch. Marsh's Landing was the name given to the shipping point of a 17,000-acre (69 km2) rancho. It included a safe and secure pier that extended quite far into the river, allowing vessels with up to 15 feet depth (4.6 m) of water to tie up in any season. The ranch included all the amenities needed to sustain a thriving business, such as a slaughterhouse, a smokehouse for curing hams, rodeo grounds, and even a 1+1⁄2-story dwelling brought over from across the sea. In 1849, two twin brothers, Rev. William Wiggins Smith & Rev. Joseph Horton Smith, voyaged from Boston to buy some land from John Marsh and established a settlement nearby Marsh's Landing called Smith's Landing. At the town's July 4 picnic in 1851, William – the new pastor – convinced its citizens to rename their community to 'Antioch' after the Biblical city. Coal was found in the hilly area near Antioch in 1859, becoming a great business opportunity for people there. The rise of this industry played an integral part in the creation of Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, and Black Diamond (Presently known as Pittsburg). This development was a considerable force behind the economic success of Antioch tremendously. Antioch was abuzz with activity when copper ore deposits were discovered in 1863. Smelting operations sprang up, and the ore had a great value of up to $25 per ton. Sadly, the copper bubble burst and led to disappointment in many. However, a new source of wealth appeared when petroleum was drilled for in Antioch in 1865, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to make a substantial gain. The city of Antioch was incorporated in 1872. In the late 1800s, hundreds of Chinese people were forced to live separately in the town. Moreover, they weren't allowed to walk around after dark, illustrating a significant period of segregation. Antioch's Chinatown suffered a tragic fate in 1876 when it was burned down due to arson, and the fire department refused to put out the blaze. By 1960, nearly 100 years after the incident, only 12 Chinese people were recorded on the census as Antioch residents. On April 14, 2021, Mayor Lamar Thorpe declared that the city was taking steps to honor its history by creating a historic Chinatown district in the downtown area while acknowledging its racist past. In May 2018, a new BART station was established in the city, connecting it to the broader economy of the entire San Francisco Bay Area. This provided an additional transit option for locals and visitors alike.
