Aguadilla was established by Luis de Córdova in 1775 and lay in the northwest corner of Puerto Rico. It is bordered on the north and west sides by the Atlantic Ocean. To its north is Aguada, and to its west is Isabela. Aguadilla comprises 15 neighborhoods and the central city area or "Pueblo." It is a major urban center and the nucleus of the Aguadilla-Isabela-San Sebastián Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Aguadilla was once known as San Carlos de La Aguadilla, but its name was shortened to Aguadilla over time. This name is derived from the nearby town and municipality of Aguada. The municipality of El Agujero has earned a few monikers over the years, such as Jardín del Atlántico ("Garden of the Atlantic") and Pueblo de los Tiburones ("Shark Town"), and La Villa del Ojo de Agua ("Villa of the Water Spring") after the natural water spring that was used by early settlers and Spanish soldiers as a water source which is now located in El Parterre Square in Aguadilla Pueblo. The city of Aguadilla, in its current form, began as part of the Aguada area in 1775. Don Luis de Córdova approved the setting up of the town. Still, it was only after 1780 that it separated from the more extensive territory and officially gained its own distinct identity. According to records, the area of Aguadilla was initially formed by two barrios: Victoria and Higüey. It had already been inhabited and known as Aguadilla before 1770. In 1776, Fray Íñigo Abbad y Lasierra wrote about Aguadilla being referred to as the "new Town of San Carlos de La Aguadilla" in his account of different towns on the island. Dr. Agustín Stahl established the Foundation of Aguadilla in 1780 and initiated the steps to transform it into an independent village. This began with the construction of a new church in 1775, eventually leading to Aguadilla's official formation. In 1776, the declaration of independence of Santo Domingo led to a large influx of Spanish loyalists emigrating to Puerto Rico, particularly Aguadilla. This caused a massive population boom in the area. Don Pedro Tomás de Córdova stated that Aguadilla was part of Aguada's district or "party" back in 1831. Currently, Aguadilla is divided into 15 territories - Pueblo Norte, Pueblo Sur, Ceiba Alta, Ceiba Baja, Montaña, Malezas, Aguacate, Dos Palmas, Camaseyes and Plainela. Additionally, there are Borinquen Arenales Higüey Corrales Victoria and Mangual. Don Pedro Tomás de Córdova referred to the road of Aguadilla formed by Punta Borinquen and San Francisco as an anchor point for the vessels that sail between Europe, Havana, and Mexico. He pointed out that this port is the most visited on the island due to its ability to accommodate all kinds of ships and provide them with refreshments. In 1860, Aguadilla earned its official village title. Over time, when Puerto Rico began to divide itself into seven departments, Aguadilla became the leader of the third department. This department included the municipalities of Aguada, Isabela, Lares, Moca, Rincón, and San Sebastián. In 1841, the Royal Order moved the judicial party from Aguada to Aguadilla. By 1878, as per Don Manuel Ebeda y Delgado's accounts, the region of Aguadilla underwent a few changes in its territorial organization. The barrios of Plainela, Higüey, and Mangual are omitted, while Palmar has been added. In addition, three new barrios have been created, namely Guerrero, Caimital Alto & Caimital Bajo. In 1898, Aguadilla's territorial organization remained the same as it was 20 years prior. However, according to the Census of 1899, downtown Aguadilla was split into five barrios: Higüey, Iglesia, Nueva, Santa Barbara, and Tamarindo. Malezas neighborhood is divided into Maleza Alta and Maleza Baja. Since 1948, the boundaries of Aguadilla have remained unchanged - this was when the Puerto Rico Department of Planning created a map of the city and its barrios. In compliance with instructions from the local government, parts of Caimital Alto and Higüey were joined to Downtown Aguadilla.
